CHINESE ANCESTOR'S PORTRAITS (ANTIKASIA)

Fine pair of Chinese ancestor portraits on paper.
Framed on scrolls.

On most ancestors portraits, the figures are presented full length and seated with a frontal orientation.
These portraits were commissioned by direct descendants and executed posthumously.

Chinese believed they could communicate with the spirit of the ancestor by hanging his or her portrait.

The ancestors are usually seated on a chair. They are wearing costume that identifies his or her rank.
